Tina Fey is taking on a very different role for the comedic actress and writer in the new film, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Using the military alphabet for WTF, the upcoming dark comedy stars Fey as a journalist in over her head after arriving in the Middle East.
The film is based on the book The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days In Afghanistan And Pakistan, a memoir by journalist Kim Barker. In the book, Barker writes about her time in Kabul in 2002, when she arrived speaking only English and with no understanding of how to do the ‘Taliban Shuffle’ between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Fey told USA today that she was excited to film something completely different from her previous work. Though Whiskey Tango Foxtrot was actually shot in New Mexico, Fey still took part in some of the more dangerous scenes. “For me to get to do a movie where I fly in helicopters and shoot guns and run from explosions, that’s a treat,” Fey says. “I don’t get to do any of those things on a daily basis.”
Along with Fey, the new film also stars Margot Robbie, Christopher Abbott, Alfred Molina, Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman as Fey’s love interest.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot hits theatres on March 4, 2016.
