For those who tuned into Sunday night’s 90th Academy Awards and made it through the 3.5+ hour telecast, one of the rewards was seeing the first trailer for the highly anticipated Mary Poppins Returns.
Both of the film’s stars were in attendance during Sunday’s star-studded event, with Emily Blunt surprising movie goers at a theatre across the street from the Dolby Theatre and Lin-Manuel Miranda getting a shout out from Jimmy Kimmel during his opening monologue. Around the halfway point of the marathon award show, Disney finally debuted the first trailer for Mary Poppins Returns, which is scheduled to land in theatres Christmas 2018.
The new film centres on Blunt as Poppins returning to London to see grown up Jane and Michael Banks, played by Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw, who make an appearance in the new trailer. Miranda plays Jack, an apprentice lamplighter to Dick Van Dyke’s famous Bert, with Van Dyke also appearing in the new film as Mr. Dawes Jr.
In the first trailer, Mary Poppins lands in London via a kite and arrives to surprise her former charges, Michael and Jane, with Michael raising three young children after going through a loss. We have a feeling we know who will help Michael and his children get through their tragedy.
The star-studded film also features Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury and Meryl Streep, who will reunite with Blunt for the first time since The Devil Wears Prada. We don’t think Mary Poppins would take any of Miranda Priestly’s crap.
