There’s been no shortage of beautiful tributes to the David Bowie since his passing earlier this year. Lady Gaga stunned with her incredible retrospective performance at the Grammys, while Lorde kept things simple and emotional at the Brit Awards.
Many other artists who were influenced by the late musician performed their own tributes on stage and in concert, but the most recent homage comes from R&B artist Trey Songz.
On tonight’s brand new episode of Vinyl, Trey Songz covers Bowie’s Life On Mars, with Executive Producer Mick Jagger asking Songz to perform the track last summer before Bowie’s untimely passing.
Trey Songz told Complex Magazine “When I was approached last summer by the producers of Vinyl, the first thing I thought was, ‘Damn that’s a David Bowie song!!’ I was honored that the producers thought of such a legend and myself in the same breath. I had to do what I do best, because Icons like David paved the way. After learning of his passing I knew that this was a special moment in time and this cover became my personal tribute to David.”
The stripped down performance, which features only Trey’s voice and a piano accompaniment, is a beautiful ballad that will continue Bowie’s legacy of making music for future generations.
Every Sunday, Vinyl Executive Producer Mick Jagger puts together the most exciting and ambitious soundtrack on TV, so much so that a new soundtrack for every episode is released each week. In addition to Trey Songz, tonight’s episode also features music from Karisma and Tunde Adebimpe.
