It’s never too early to be annoyed by Christmas. Today’s warm weather dose of the holiday season comes from an unlikely source. Tyler, The Creator has lent his vocals to the latest telling of Dr. Seuss’ classic story about the Grinch who stole Christmas, because when we think warm and fuzzy kids stories about holiday cheer, we think Tyler, The Creator. Just when we thought 2018 couldn’t get any weirder…
In the new trailer for Illumination’s upcoming animated film The Grinch, Tyler, The Creator can be heard singing the famous theme song “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” from 1966 animated film How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Adding his own verses to the holiday earworm, Tyler gives The Grinch’s little dog Max a shout out, rapping “All them decorations / Tear them down / You can ask Max / I don’t play around.” Honestly, it works. We don’t know whose idea it was to pair Tyler, The Creator and The Grinch, but well played.
In addition to the famous theme, Tyler, The Creator has also written an original song for the film titled “I Am The Grinch.”
The Grinch stars Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch as the evil creature with green hair and yellow teeth, with Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson, and Angela Lansbury also voicing characters. Like most films from Illumination, including Despicable Me, The Secret Life Of Pets, and SING, The Grinch is geared towards a younger audience, but let’s be real—adults will still fill the theatre seats. We lol’d a few times at the trailer.
The latest retelling of Dr. Seuss’ 1957 children’s book follows Jim Carrey’s live action film. Released in 2000, How The Grinch Stole Christmas also starred Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Molly Shannon, and Taylor Momsen. Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins acted as the narrator, with Grammy winner Pharrell taking over narration duties for the upcoming 3D animated film The Grinch.
The Grinch will slink into theatres and steal your popcorn on November 9.
