Attention Wildcats! Vanessa Hudgens Returns to Her ‘High School Musical’ Roots With ‘Lay With Me’

Vanessa Hudgens, High School Musical

It’s been ten years since actor and singer Vanessa Hudgens put on a Wildcats uniform to play High School Musical star Gabriella Montez. Since then, Hudgens has managed to make the difficult transition from Disney star to serious actor, taking on roles in Beastly, Spring Breakers, and the Broadway show Gigi. Her next major appearance has Hudgens starring opposite Jennifer Lopez in Second Chance, with Lopez the epitome of an artist who has managed to bridge the gap between acting and singing.

Hudgens appears to be ready pull a Lopez and return to her musical roots, with the artist recently teaming up with fellow Disney-alums Phantoms, made up of Kyle Kaplan (Hannah Montana) and Vinnie Pergola (That’s So Raven). In a new behind-the-scenes video for their song “Lay With Me,” the trio reveal that a chance encounter at a New York airport in early 2018 resulted in the upbeat new love song.

“The concept behind the video is basically going back to our roots,” says Hudgens. Remaking the High School Musical “Breaking Free” scene, Hudgens performs on the stage of a high school auditorium before moving into a dance number that includes breaking just about everything in her path. Shooting the video in the style of a Disney movie from the early 2000s, Phantoms enlisted the help of director The Dads.

Releasing the full music video earlier this month, “Lay With Me” has already amassed 1.5 million views on YouTube and is making us want to hear a full album from Hudgens. While the actor hasn’t given any indication that she’s ready to make a full time leap into music, her High School Musical co-star and real life bestie Ashley Tisdale is ready to rule the charts.

Tisdale announced on her social media this week that she’s preparing to drop her third studio album Symptoms this year. Posting an image of herself in a silk negligee, Tisdale teased the name of the first single, titled “Voices In My Head,” which is set to be released on November 8.

“Symptoms” will be Tisdale’s first solo album in nine years following 2009’s Guilty Pleasure. Fingers crossed for a Gabriella/Sharpay duet on the new record.
