Who Is Next On The Nerd Crush Throne?

Fri, July, 25 by

Today is the second day of the San Diego Comic-Con and there has already been a lot of buzz around all the new projects showcasing at the convention. But of course, all anyone ever talks about is nerd crush of the century Benedict Cumberbatch. He was at the conference promoting his new animated film Penguins of Madagascar. But it got me thinking about who’d be next in line to inherit the nerd crush throne. Who am I kidding? I think about this all the time. So, here are the top 5 contenders to take over, or at least, share the top spot in our hearts.

Nicholas Hoult, 24:
Probably the most famous person on the list. He started out as a child actor. Made everyone say, “What!? That is the kid from About a Boy?” when he popped back up to the mainstream in a pink fuzzy sweater in Tom Ford’s A Single Man. May be the greatest case for sticking it out through the awkward years… besides Matthew Lewis. Has an on-again-off-again relationship with America’s Sweetheart Jennifer Lawrence. I think they are on again right now.

His nerd credentials:
Well… he has played Beast in the past two X-Men movies. So that is a few dozen points right there.

He was the male romantic lead/dead person in the zombie love story Warm Bodies about a cute zombie boy and a cute human girl who fall in love.

He also voiced both Captain America and Harry Potter on an episode of Robot Chicken. Plus, he leant his voice to Fable III as the character Elliot.

What’s on deck:
The next X-Men movie X-Men: Apocalypse comes out in 2016 and is currently in pre-production.

He also starred in Young Ones, a dystopian sci-fi movie that showed at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, about a teenage boy trying to protect his family in a future where water is scarce.

Plus, he isn’t slowing down with the sci-fi kick in another new project, Equals, a love story set in a future where emotions have been eradicated, and a remake of the classic dystopian film Mad Max.

And as in any super hero franchise, the possibility of getting his own Beast movie is never off of the table.

Jameson Empire Awards - Arrivals

John Boyega, 22:
Born in London to Nigerian parents. He started in theatre before getting his first movie role in Attack the Block. Has used the hastag #NerdAtHeart. Has a stare that will get to the middle of your soul. He also looks good in both a suit and a baseball cap.

His nerd credentials:
The amazing indie alien movie Attack the Block about a gang of rough and tumble UK teens who have to defend their apartment building from an alien invasion.

Becoming Human, the BBC supernatural drama about non-human beings living alongside regular people, where Boyega played a human bully who goes to school with a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost.

He also played a US Air Force officer in the recent 24 reboot 24: Live Another Day.

What’s on deck:
Boyega was one of the first cast members announced for Star Wars: Episode VII. He can be spotted in the black and white shot of a group of the actors meeting at Pinewood Studios in the UK. No word yet on what his role will be.

He also stirred up rumours of being cast as Marvel’s Black Panther by tweeting “Marvel role… hehehe… I’m damn right aiming for it,” and “Currently booking a flight to Wakanada.” In the Marvel world, Wakanada is a fictional African nation ruled by T’Challa, aka The Black Panther.

Premiere Of Focus Features' "Anna Karenina" - Arrivals

Domhnall Gleeson, 31:
This man has to be my favourite on the list. I just love me some Domhnall. He is following in the footsteps of the super dupes famous actor dad Brenden Gleeson – ya know, Mad-Eye Moody. Six Shooter, the short film Domhnall was in won an Oscar in 2004. He was also nominated for a Tony Award. He has great hair. He is straight up a Weasley.

His nerd credentials:

He starred in the dystopian future movie based off of my favourite book of all time, Never Let Me Go, as Rodney. Without saying too much, he plays an older mentor who helps Andrew Garfield, Kiera Knightley, and Carey Mulligan through a very emotional time in their life.

He played Clan Techie (which I can only presume is his role not the character’s actual name) in Dredd 3D based off of the comic Judge Dredd about a violent law enforcement officer who has complete power over the justice system.

Man this dude should just take the crown now. He starred in one episode of the brilliant British series, Black Mirror which is often called The Twilight Zone for the digital generation. His episode will rip your heart out. For real.

What’s on deck:
Along with John Boyega, Gleeson was one of the first cast members announced for the next Star Wars movie. Again there is no word yet on what his role will be but there are rumours that the children of the original trio, Luke, Leia & Han, will play a prominent role.

But before that comes out, Gleeson will appear alongside fellow Episode VII cast member Oscar Isaacs (honorable mention) in the sci-fi flick Ex Machina. Let me refer to the official synopsis: Ex Machina is an intense psychological thriller, played out in a love triangle between two men and a beautiful robot girl. It explores big ideas about the nature of consciousness, emotion, sexuality, truth and lies.” Woah.

"Kick-Ass 2" And "Riddick" Panels - Comic-Con International 2013

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 24:
Another good old British boy. As a child, he was tutoured in jazz dancing, tap and acrobatics. He learned how to balance an egg on a stick for his role in The Illusionist. His favourite actor is Daniel Day-Lewis. Taylor-Johnson married his Nowhere Boy director and they have two daughters together. Taylor is half of her last name. Gotta love a feminist.

His nerd credentials:
Taylor-Johnson really broke out as an actor to watch after his role in Kick Ass as the titular character. I just like saying titular character. He also returned for the sequel in 2013. It is one of the most acclaimed super hero movies because of how it broke the mold.

He hit the super hero mainstream in Captain America: Winter Solider. Well kind off. He pops up in the post credits scene that teases the next movie. He plays Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver. That character is also Magneto’s son.

What’s on deck:
He will appear in a much larger role as Quicksilver in the next Avengers movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron.

WIRED Cafe @ Comic Con - Day 1

Pedro Pascal, 39:
Chilean American actor Pascal has been an actor for a long time but really became famous after playing Oberyn Martell, The Red Viper on Game of Thrones. Let’s just say he has had a very memorable character arc. Also has a very adorable Instagram relationship with his co-star Lena Headey, Cersei Lannister. Used to rock Bieber bangs. He is the only person not from the UK on this list. Knows how to pull a beer.

His nerd credentials:
His main nerd credential is, of course, his role on Game of Thrones. Pedro took what at first seemed to be a small character (for non book readers) and ended up shining as the star of this past season.

He had a supporting role in the sci-fi drama The Adjustment Bureau alongside Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.

He also has appeared on the nerd library standard Buffy the Vampire Slayer, created by cultural god Joss Whedon.

What’s on deck:
Pedro will be starring in a new Netflix series, Narcos about the notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. Pedro will play DEA agent Javier Pena.

He will also star as the nemesis in the movie Blood Sucking Bastards, about… you guessed it… vampires. But in the workplace!
