Zayn Malik Achieves Leading Man Status In ‘Dusk Til Dawn’ Video

Zayn Malik has just released his new music video for “Dusk till Dawn” and while there aren’t any Winnebagos or vampires, there’s definitely lots of drama.

Malik teamed up with singer-songwriter Sia, who provided backing vocals on the new single. While Sia’s trademark melancholy pop soars throughout the chorus, Malik’s fingerprints are still all over the song, which features a throbbing R&B bass. The track was produced by Sia’s frequent collaborator Greg Kurstin, who is famous for his work with Adele, Kelly Clarkson and Tegan & Sara.

Malik plays a gangster who appears to be sold out by his partner, played by Girls‘ Jemima Kirke, to the police. After being released from custody, Malik leads the police on a high-speed chase through the streets of LA, finally making his way to a safe house before he escapes through an underground tunnel and meets up with Kirke.

While Malik’s former One Direction bandmate Harry Styles may have had a huge summer breakthrough as one of the new hottest Hollywood stars thanks to his impressive role in Dunkirk, it looks like Malik may also be poised for an acting career.

He can make opening a briefcase seem interesting.

He can look worried.

He can look guilty.

He can deliver the line “You don’t know me” without sounding cheesy.

He can look natural in a getaway car.

Casting Jemima Kirke as his love interest was a surprising and welcomed choice for Malik, who has previously starred opposite his real-life girlfriend Gigi Hadid in music videos. Not surprisingly, singer Sia does not appear in the new video, although her vocals can be heard throughout the track.

Malik likely teamed up with director Marc Webb in order to achieve a big budget film feel for his latest video. Having worked with artists like Maroon 5 (“Goodnight Goodnight), Green Day (“21 Guns”) and Miley Cyrus (“Start All Over”) and sitting behind the camera for The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2, 500 Days of Summer and Gifted, Webb is one of Hollywood’s few directors who splits his time equally between feature films and music videos.

“Dusk Till Dawn” isn’t the first single from Malik’s upcoming sophomore album, having already released “Still Got Time” with Toronto’s PARTYNEXTDOOR and “Wrong” with Kehlani. Though with the star power of Sia, it’s likely we’ll hear “Dusk Till Dawn” on the radio much more than the previous collaborations.

Malik has yet to announce when he will be releasing a follow-up to his impressive 2016 debut Mind of Mine, but a brand-new music video is a good indication that the new album could be right around the corner.
