“From like the first year really, I never really wanted to be there in the band,” Malik says in his first on camera, solo interview, regarding his time in One Direction.
Now that he’s gone solo, he has the freedom to write his own music. But it wasn’t always that way, “I just gave it a go because it was there at the time and then when I realized the direction we were going in with the music, I instantly realized it wasn’t for me because I realized I couldn’t put any input in; I couldn’t give my opinion on this or that because it didn’t fit the grain of what we were as a band or what we represented,” Malik says. This was the driving force to push Zayn Malik towards his budding solo career as a musician.
Aside from discussing the time spent in One Direction, Malik dished some details about his upcoming debut album, Mind Of Mine, which is set to be released this spring.
The album will contain roughly 17 or 18 tracks, according to the singer. He chose the best of the best out of a massive pool of songs he wrote for the release – 47 songs!
However, the track list still isn’t finalized: “There are obviously little bits that I still need to do to make it sound great,” he says.
Currently One Direction is on an two-year hiatus, but it’s looking this might be a glorified way of saying the boy band is breaking up for good. Looks like they’re all going in different directions now (bad pun alert)!
Malik is scheduled to his first single, Pillowtalk, tomorrow.
