Zayn Malik’s affinity for trippy music videos isn’t exclusive to the pop singer’s solo work. After much hype on social media from all parties involved, Malik and Snakehips have released the video for their new collaboration “Cruel.” And it’s pretty psychedelic.
The British electronic duo don’t appear in the video, instead leaving the heavy lifting to the genetically blessed Malik. The video opens with two police officers cuffing a man outside a night club. Inside the club, Malik is seated in a living room and then moves through a TV screen to an empty room, then again through a screen to a room full of dancers, where now he’s on screen. The transition continues throughout the video, with dark lighting and strobe effects creating a dizzying feeling.
Snakehips are best known for their 2015 track, “All My Friends” with Tinashe and Chance The Rapper, from their EP Forever, PT II. Their latest release, an EP titled All My Friends, also features the track “Money On Me” with Anderson .Paak.
But Snakehips aren’t the only artists the former One Direction member has collaborated with recently. M.I.A. has announced that Malik will appear on her upcoming fifth album, AIM, out September 9. Malik’s vocals will be featured on the track “Freedun,” with producers Diplo and Blaqstarr also working on the new disc.
We still don’t know when we’re going to hear music from the rest of One Direction, but at least we have Malik to keep us dancing.
