Zayn Malik has never been an artist we could predict. From his surprising exit of One Direction (we always thought it would be Harry Styles to bow out first), to his exciting solo debut Mind of Mine, to his inconsistency in releasing singles (last year we had “From Dusk Til Dawn” and then radio silence), it’s been difficult to predict what Malik’s next move will be.
That’s the case again this week, with Malik returning to social media to upload a number of poems and musical snippets that seem to indicate a new album could be on the horizon. But again, who knows? Malik has yet to make any official or even unofficial statement on the teasers, skipping Wednesday night’s Brit Awards where he was nominated for British Artist Video of the Year for “I Don’t Want To Live Forever” with Taylor Swift. The award eventually went to Malik’s ex-band mate, Harry Styles.
Starting on February 9, Zayn began posting poetry to his 27 million Instagram followers, with artwork that looks like it could be the inside of an album sleeve.
Now Zayn has stepped up his social media game, posting a handful of musical snippets. Sounding rough but promising, the moody tracks feature Malik singing over pianos and synthesizers.
Malik’s latest posts actually show the singer, with a number of videos featuring Malik playing the guitar and at times singing.
It’s difficult to tell whether the new teasers are part of full songs that will make up Malik’s sophomore solo album, or if he just got a new MacBook and wants to try out all the filters. Either way, we’re impressed.
