If you follow pop singer Zayn Malik on Instagram, you may have noticed the British singer wiping his account over the weekend. Fans went into panic mode following Malik’s move to erase his Instagram account, a decision we now know was in anticipation of the release of new music. Zayn, don’t scare us like that.
On Sunday, Malik uploaded a teaser for his latest single and music video, with both set to be released on Thursday. Though a title for the song has not been announced, the action-packed trailer has Malik flexing his acting muscles and shooting the video like a mini film, similar to his Sia collaboration “Dusk Til Dawn.”
Drama, guns, casinos, fight scenes, and sexy times all make the cut for the trailer, which shows Malik with both his natural black hair and his recently dyed blonde locks. With no music, it’s unclear what direction Malik’s sound will take for his second album. Zayn was previously uploading new music to his Instagram account in February, but of course that’s all gone now. While it’s unclear what the new music will sound like, the trailer already has us counting down the clock until Thursday’s premiere.
Malik’s decision to erase his social media before announcing the new song is a move straight from his friend and “I Don’t Wanna Live” collaborator Taylor Swift’s promo handbook. Swift made the same move in 2017 before announcing her fifth studio album Reputation and the lead single “Look What You Made Me Do.”
As for Malik, deleting his Instagram history may have had a second facet. In addition to clearing the way for new music, erasing his Instagram account also took care of removing photos of his ex-girlfriend Gigi Hadid, with the two announcing the end of their relationship in March. Break-ups are messy…but they’re also great inspiration for new music.
