Ahead of the release of Disney’s live-action Aladdin the studio released one of the film’s most iconic songs performed by Zayn and Zhavia Ward. The pair’s rendition of “A Whole New World” will play over the film’s end credits.
This moody, romantic version of the ballad is set in New York but still feels as magical as the animated flying carpet ride version from the original. Ward, who rose to fame competing on the singing show The Four, and Zayn’s harmonies amplify the romance in the track and make it their own.
Fans are loving the new ballad, and Zayn’s fans in particular are calling him their Aladdin. Back in 2017, fans expressed they wanted the “Pillowtalk” singer to be cast as Aladdin. Their requests were met with criticism though since Disney wanted Middle Eastern actors, and Zayn is not Middle Eastern—he’s Pakistani. We guess having Zayn on the soundtrack is the next best thing.
Earlier this week Will Smith, who plays Genie in the new movie, spoke to Jimmy Fallon about playing the iconic Robin Williams character and gave fans a sneak peek at another updated song. Smith puts a hip hop twist on “Friend Like Me” and performed a small part on Fallon’s show:
The upcoming movie stars Markham, Ontario’s Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine. The film will also feature some new tunes, two of which were written with The Greatest Showman songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
Disney fans can take a trip to Agrabah when Aladdin comes out in theatres May 24.
